Buccaneers activate Ryan Griffin from injured reserve
Griffin will be Ryan Fitzpatrick’s backup, with Jameis Winston sidelined for at least two weeks.
Winston injured his shoulder four weeks and played through it, but aggravated the injury in every game. Add the fact that his play was far from inspiring the last two weeks, and the Bucs made the decision to give his shoulder rest for two weeks—or possibly longer, depending on how the recovery progresses.
That leaves the team with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback, and Ryan Griffin as the backup. Griffin has been with the Bucs for three seasons, and while he hasn’t actually played for them, they liked him enough to keep him on the roster as a third quarterback in 2015 and 2016. He was placed on injured reserve at the end of the 2017 preseason, in which it looked like he would actually beat Fitzpatrick for the backup job until his injury. He is apparently healthy enough to play now, though.
To make room for Fitzpatrick, the team waived recently-signed cornerback Deji Olatoye.
