MLB winter meetings: Burch Smith selected by the Mets; traded to the Royals in the Rule 5 Draft

December 14th, 2017

The Rays lose a pitching prospect during the draft With the 6th overall selection in the Rule 5 Draft, the New York Mets acquired RHP Burch Smith from the Tampa Bay Rays, and have traded him to the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations. Smith, 27, has some major league experience under his belt, making his debut during the 2014 season. He made 10 appearances (7 starts, 3 in relief) for the San Diego Padres that season, but was shutdown towards the end of the year with a forearm strain. The following off-season, he would be included in a trade that brought Wil Myers to San Diego, as he was... Read More

Tampa Bay Lightning ten-game stats report: keep doing what you’re doing

December 14th, 2017

The Lightning are playing like one of the best teams in the NHL. I’d like to start this in-depth quantitative review of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s performance through their first thirty games by acknowledging the most important contributor to the team so far this season: us. Yes, us. That lucky shirt we wear every game? It’s working. We should keep wearing it. Keep washing it exactly as often as we have been. We drink the same beverages in the same order during every game? That’s working too. Keep doing that. We take our dogs out during the same timeouts every game? Hey, they might have... Read More

Four Rays could be taken in the Rule 5 draft

December 14th, 2017

JJ Cooper comes down with Rule 5 fever every year and puts out the most comprehensive list of prospects that could be taken. The list ends up around 100 deep. Usually only about 15 are taken and of those 15 only about 25-30% of players stick with their new organization. Cooper’s list of top five prospects available include players in the Tampa Bay Rays minor league system. RHP Burch Smith Coming in at number one is right hand pitcher Burch Smith. Smith missed all of 2015 and 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery but came back looking like the player who was once an intriguing prospect.... Read More

The Buccaneers can’t afford to lose Noah Spence this offseason

December 13th, 2017

Jameis Winston is the easy answer, but there are other players too. Which player can the Tampa Bay Buccaneers not afford to lose this offseason? The easy answer is Jameis Winston, because the easy answer is always the quarterback. It’s true, of course, but not particularly interesting. I know some Bucs fans are souring on Winston, but he’s having a better season than he did last year, statistically, despite the injury and ruinous offensive line performance. Winston’s certainly still on track to be a very good NFL quarterback, and the Bucs aren’t about to find a better quarterback on... Read More

December 13th, 2017

For the Syracuse Crunch, the first month and a half of the season was almost exactly what we expected. Syracuse came into October with a plethora of fresh young faces that struggled to adjust to the pro game out of the gates. We always knew the talent was there and that they would eventually figure it out and put together some good hockey games late in the season. What we didn’t expect was to be eating our words by mid-November. Head coach Ben Groulx’s young team hasn’t lost a game since November 19th, a stretch where they have compiled an impressive nine-game winning streak. They have... Read More

Quick Strikes: Tampa Bay Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy improves to 8-0-0 against the west

December 13th, 2017

Which bodes very, very well. The Bolts Before I get to the articles singing Tampa Bay Lightning’s praises in last night’s game, here are a few more post-game notes care of Lightning beat writer Bryan Burns. Jon Cooper’s quotes about the game are a pretty good summary of the hard work Andrei Vasilevskiy did to kee the team alive in the second: In the second period, we let them have a chance to get right back in the game and our goalie had to bail us out. And then, our third period, we scored in the third, we had some chances actually to extend it, but in the end, we were just... Read More

Buccaneers promote LB Riley Bullough to the active roster

December 12th, 2017

Gerald McCoy sticks around for now. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are promoting linebacker Riley Bullough to the active roster, the team announces. Bullough made a name for himself during the preseason, when he was one of the stars of Hard Knocks. Looking good on camera and getting a reputation for hard work and leadership wasn’t enough to get Bullough on the initial 53-man roster, but he’s getting his chance now. He’ll mostly have to make an impact on special teams. To make room for Bullough, the Bucs waived cornerback Deji Olatoye, who’d been on the roster for a week. Surprisingly, Gerald... Read More

MLB trade rumors: Rays should target speed this offseason

December 12th, 2017

Is speed the new 2%? In Kevin Cash’s press conference on Monday, a reporter asked the Rays manager what he saw going forward as an advantage. Here was his response: I think that speed is a big part of the game and I think power is kind of what everybody is paying for […] Speed doesn’t really go away. Cash also spoke very highly of Mallex Smith, saying that he “ignited us” and was looking forward to “taking of the reigns”. The same reporter followed up his question with asking Kevin Cash: “Is there room to have two speed guys in the outfield right now, or is the game too... Read More
