The case for keeping Chris Baker

January 22nd, 2018

The Bucs defensive line did improve in some ways. During the free agency period of 2016, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were in search of defensive line help, particularly someone to play opposite of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. All eyes were directed at former defensive tackle Dontari Poe. That is not who the Bucs signed in free agency. It was another defensive tackle, Chris Baker. There were stats bandied about when the Bucs signed Baker that he can perform similarly to Poe, except that he did not cost as much as Poe. Poe has an $8 million contract for only one year with the Falcons.... Read More

NFL Playoffs Schedule, Conference Championship edition

January 21st, 2018

Everything you need to know to watch today’s games. The NFL playoffs continue today, as the conference championship games will determine who gets to go to the Super Bowl, and who has to stay at home and sulk (and in many cases, play in the Pro Bowl). The New England Patriots face the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC title. That’s a matchup few would have predicted before the season, with the Jaguars looking like bottom-feeders. Instead, they’ve steamrolled through most of the AFC and have been amazing in the playoffs—despite some decidedly mediocre performances from Jake Jortles Blake... Read More

Mel Kiper’s first 2018 NFL Mock Draft has the Bucs passing on pass-rushers

January 19th, 2018

Mel Kiper prefers to fix the running game instead. ESPN’s Mel Kiper published his first 2018 NFL mock draft of the year yesterday, and he has the Tampa Bay Buccaneers grabbing Quenton Nelson, the Notre Dame guard, who’s a surprisingly popular pick for Tampa. The Bucs couldn’t run the ball in 2017, averaging only 3.7 yards per carry and 90.6 yards per game. Was it the running backs, the offensive line or both? Nelson is a plug-and-play starter who would be an upgrade for almost every team. He’s a dominant run-blocker at 6-5, 330, who causes destruction at the point of attack. If Barkley... Read More

Injuries broke the Buccaneers defensive line, and boosted the Jaguars’

January 18th, 2018

Health matters in the NFL. The 2016 season looked promising for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive line. General manager Jason Licht seemed to have assembled talent in the middle and on the ends. The interior of the line had Gerald McCoy, Clinton McDonald, and Akeem Spence. McDonald came to the Bucs as a free agent in 2015, McCoy and Spence were drafted by a previous regime. On the outside, the Bucs boasted William Gholston, Jacquies Smith, Robert Ayers, and 2nd round rookie Noah Spence. Gholston and Noah Spence were drafted, Smith was an undrafted free agent, and Ayers was a sought after free... Read More

DeSean Jackson says things about Jameis Winston and the Bucs

January 17th, 2018

And apparently, what he said can be interpreted several ways. DeSean Jackson’s always good for some offseason controversy. This time, he said some things about Jameis Winston—nothing particularly controversial, but he went on ESPN’s First Take to share some of his thoughts on the lack of production last year. The substance of his comments isn’t that interesting. Standard stuff: he felt like he could have gotten the ball deep more (true), but that there were a lot of reasons why that didn’t work (also true). He said that Jameis Winston has everything he needs to be a franchise quarterback... Read More

Kwon Alexander named to 2018 Pro Bowl

January 16th, 2018

Alexander will replace Bobby Wagner, who dropped out due to injury. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have at least two players at the Pro Bowl this year, instead of just one. Linebacker Kwon Alexander was just added to the 2018 Pro Bowl roster, replacing injured Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner. Alexander had 97 tackles and three interceptions this season, earning him his first Pro Bowl appearance. It is a bit surprising that he made it in over Lavonte David, though: David racked up five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in what was a strong return to form for the veteran linebacker.... Read More

NLF Mock Draft 2018: Should the Buccaneers trade up?

January 15th, 2018

If they want to secure their pass-rusher, they may need to make a move. The NFL playoffs continue, but so does the 2018 NFL draft season. Mock drafts galore, of course, and over at SB Nation’s Dan Kadar has a new one up. And by ‘new’ I mean: a mock draft that makes the obvious choice of North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb for the Bucs. This would be an easy choice for the Buccaneers, and you could argue that they should attempt to trade up for Chubb. He’s one of the five best players in the draft this year and should contribute immediately as a pass rusher. This is the obvious... Read More

NFC South teams keep blowing their playoff dreams in spectacular fashion

January 15th, 2018

Not being in the playoffs means you don’t suffer these crushing defeats. There’s one upside to not being in the playoffs: you don’t get your heart broken in crucial games by your defense allowing 61-yard touchdown catches with seconds left. That, of course, is what happened to the New Orleans Saints yesterday. They’d almost completed an epic comeback in the second half, after embarrassing themselves in the first half against the Minnesota Vikings. And then somehow their much-improved defense did what no defense should ever do: allow a long touchdown when the game is on the line. It... Read More

The Saints are the only NFC South team left in the playoffs

January 14th, 2018

The Falcons flunked out yesterday. The NFC South was well-represented in the playoffs this year, with the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons all making it in. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the lone team left out, to the misery of many Bucs fans. Two-and-a-half playoff weekends in, though, the NFC South has just the New Orleans Saints left. The Buccaneers won’t return to London in 2018, either

January 12th, 2018

Once upon a time, it looked like the Bucs were infatuated with the UK. Back in 2009, Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into a sort of collective panic. The Bucs were playing a game in London, and the team’s owners also own Manchester United. With flagging attendance and terrible results, it seemed like only a matter of time before the Bucs would move there. Then, in 2011, the Bucs played there again. That game was the start of the end for Raheem Morris and Josh Freeman, as it started a ten-game losing streak. It was also confirmation in the eyes of some that the Bucs were preparing for an eventual... Read More
