Game Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees
Jake Faria makes the last start of his rookie season as he takes on the Yankees
That’s where the similarities end.
Tonight, Jake Faria will be taking the mound for the final time during the 2017 MLB season. The rookie has produced a tremendous rookie campaign, albeit a few stumbles along the way, but his performance early on helped propel the team into a playoff contender.
Facing Faria on the mound will be Sonny Gray, whom the Yankees acquired at the trade deadline in exchange for a trio of prospects. Since joining the Yankees, Gray has seen a surge in homeruns allowed (to be expected with the switch from Oakland to New York), but his other results have been solid.
Gray will come at opposing hitters with a fastball and sinker, sitting in the low to mid 90’s. He’ll back that us with a devastating slider that opponents are hitting just .141 off this season. His curveball, which has usually been his best pitch, has been a concern for him this year with opponents hitting over .300 against him whenever he goes to that pitch.
