American League Wild Card Update – September 11th
The Twins still control the second Wild Card spot, but for how much longer?
The 2017 regular season is nearing its conclusion as there are just 3 weeks left to play.
Over the past week, the Wild Card chase in the American League hasn’t changed much, a couple of teams dropped further back while the race for the second spot became more secluded.
Heading into play tonight, the New York Yankees have full control of the top Wild Card spot as they posses a 3.5 game lead over the Minnesota Twins. The Twins meanwhile, have 1 game lead over the Los Angeles Angels for the second Wild Card spot.
Behind the Angels, the other contending teams had somewhat rough weeks as they fell slightly further behind.
The Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers are both at .500, 2.5 games back in the chase. The Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners are the next closest as they sit 3 games back. The Tampa Bay Rays round out the contenders as they sit 3.5 games behind the Twins.
The Twins gained some breathing room from the rest of the pack, but still have the Angels hot on their tail.
Still though, all it would take is a decent one week run for a team to make the chase look completely different and with each team having around 15-18 games left, things could get quite interesting over the next several days.
